The ethical dilemma starts with Mary. Mary was so excited about having this blood drive, and so excited to get blood from some donors with rare blood types. She could choose to act as if nothing happened and continue the blood drive, but that would be unethical. The best thing for her to do would be to report the incident to the manager’s management. The incident is not only unethical; it was illegal and completely inappropriate behavior. This action causes Mary, Joe, and Peggy to make a decision; do they go on with their day as if nothing happened and continue to collect blood for the drive, or do they proceed to report the incident to the senior manager’s manager. Would it be fair to Peggy if Joe and Mary just let it go as if nothing happened? If they did let it go, they would not be truthful. The values that conflict here are truth and fairness.

Mary should deal with Peggy by offering her some comfort, woman to woman. While she is doing this, she needs to leave Peggy with the choice to either report the situation or not. Whatever Peggy decides to do, Mary should support. In regards to Joe, Mary should thank him for his quick wittedness in responding in the situation. Joe stepped in and defended his college while at the same time defused the situation. As far as the donor, if he so chooses to continue to give blood, let Joe take his blood. Once he is done, he needs to be reported to his management team. This was one man’s bad choice within a corporation. There is no need for the corporation to take the wrath for this man’s actions.
