Surveillance cameras are being used more frequently in public locations.  Some people view this as a tool for crime prevention and protection, while others view it as an invasion of privacy.  Some questions that come up regarding this are:

  • Is it ethical for businesses to use video cameras to record customers’ activities?  If so, for what purposes?
  • Does the government have the responsibility to use every means possible to protect the country and it’s citizens?  Or do the citizens have the right to not be watched in public?
  • If it were a police officer instead of a video camera keeping watch, would it be more acceptable from a privacy standpoint?
  • Does the risk of being recorded deter some illegal or unethical acts?
