“The most detailed analysis to date of how humans differ from one another at the DNA level shows strong evidence that natural selection has shaped the recent evolution of our species, according to researchers from Cornell University, Celera Genomics and Celera Diagnostics.” (ScienceDaily,Oct.23,2005)
According to the study performed, scientists at Cornell University analyzed some 11,624 genes. They compared how these genes varied among 39 different humans and between these humans and a chimpanzee. They used the chimpanzee because their DNA is 99% identical to a human’s. These comparisons between the different humans and the chimpanzee showed about 9% of the genes which show a variability within humans and chimpanzees “have evolved to rapidly to be explained simply by chance.” (ScienceDaily)
The study suggested that natural selection was responsible for this increased rate of evolution. The team from Cornell/Celera found that genes which are “involved in the immune function, sperm and egg production, sensory perception and transcription factors” (ScienceDaily) have been affected by positive selection and they show rapid evolution within the last 5 million years, which is when humans and chimps shared a common ancestor.
