Their purpose is how we react to situations or the environment surrounding us. Defense mechanism are normal and we all have them but Yes, these can become harmful. They can produce compulsive repetitive,and neurotic behaviors (Feist & Feist, 2009) . So most likely if we act in these manners in an extreme manner this could harm us physically or mentally as well as others, causing anxiety disorders. Our defensive behaviors are a useful function, it protects our ego from the pain of anxiety (Feist & Feist, 2009)...
