Wk 4 assignment 1

DQ 1 Our personality is what defines us as individuals. It is the sum total of our experiences and biology. Because no two people have identical experiences, you would not expect any two people to have the same personality. How then can psychologists categorize personalities into types? Choose a particular theory of personality and explain how it can be used to describe an individual's personality. Google the keyword phrase: Internet Personality Inventory Survey which should take you to the ongoing personality inventory project conducted by William Revelle a professor at Northwestern University. The project begins with asking your consent to participate in the personality inventory project. The information collected doesn’t include any personal identifying information, so the consent is mainly to inform you of such and how the information collected will be used. If you consent to the project then you will be able to access the inventory. Typically the questions of an inventory like this will ask you situational questions such as if you like to talk to others at a party. You will rate your response if the phrase is a very accurate description to a very inaccurate description of yourself for that particular question. After you have taken the personality inventory test, answer the following questions: • Do you think that the results of your inventory test indicate a personality type similar to what you expected? Why or why not? • Based on what you have learned so far, do you think the big five personality dimensions are an accurate way of describing an individual’s personality or is there a better way of describing personality? Explain your answer. Justify your answers with appropriate reasoning and research from your text and course readings. Comment on the postings of at least two peers, and provide an analysis of each peer’s postings while also suggesting specific additions or clarifications for improving the discussion question response.

DQ 2 Psychology is not just about an individual's behavior. We are social animals, and therefore, our interactions in groups and in society as a whole also form an important part of understanding human behavior. What makes social psychology unique in terms of a social science? Explain why social psychology may be different from sociology. Most psychology textbooks use the Milgram experiment as a way to describe conformity and obedience. There are significant ethical flaws in the experiment, which make it inappropriate by current standards. However, it does lead to some interesting thoughts regarding obedience and conformity. Explain the experiment in detail and describe why it worked. Based on your understanding of the social norms during the time of the experiment and those that exist now, do you think that this type of experiment could be repeated? Discuss whether or not the participants would agree to be part of the experiment. Justify your answers with appropriate reasoning and research from your textbook and course readings. Start reviewing and responding to at least two of your classmates as early in the week as possible. You can ask technical questions or respond generally to the overall experience. Be sure to be honest, clear, and concise. Always use constructive language, even in criticism, to work toward the goal of positive progress. Using questions and seeking clarifications are good ways to make your reviews substantive!

Wk 4 Assignment 2

Assignment 2: Essay—Prejudice and Discrimination In social psychology, one of the main ways of studying how people interact with each other and their group behavior is through observation. One aspect of observation is through understanding the media. We live in a world of mass media, with blockbuster movies, dramas, situation comedies, and twenty-four-hour news channels. Add to this product placements and commercials. It could be said that what we watch or read is a reflection of who we are as a culture, but is that true? Movies like GoneWith the Wind (1939), although spectacular cinematic experiences, were steeped in racial stereotypes. However, that was long ago. The world has changed considerably since then. Right? You expect racial, ethnic, and gender stereotypes in the media to be a thing of the past. Consider movies like Scarface (1983), The Birdcage (1996), and The Waterboy (1998) and the popular drama series The Sopranos(1999–2007)—all had main characters portraying a particular group in a stereotypical manner. The fact is that stereotypes still do exist. The purpose of this assignment is to examine stereotypes on television to see if it promotes prejudice and discrimination. Pick a television program of your choice; it should be something current (from the last ten years) and can be a drama or a situation comedy. Using what you have learned from your readings, analyze the program and answer the following questions in your essay: • What is the overall storyline and setting of the television program? Who are the main characters? • Does the program portray the main or supporting characters in a stereotypical manner in terms of race, ethnicity, or gender? If yes, describe the stereotypes and explain how the stereotypes might promote prejudice and discrimination. If the program does not seem to promote stereotypes, explain how it was able to avoid doing so. • Discuss the impact of stereotypes depicted in the media on individuals and society, using at least two contemporary examples. Submit your essay in a Microsoft Word document. Cite your sources, if any, on a separate page using the APA format.
