Solution Description

A project can be defined as any series of tasks. A project must have objectives and must be completed within certain specifications. A project will normally have a starting date and an ending date. There are going to be funds that are allocated to the project and will utilize different resources such as capital, machinery and humans. Projects usually cut across different functions of the organization. It will require input from various departments of the organization. For example the finance team will be looking after the project finances, the production team will be looking after the manufacturing, and so on.  (Kerzner, 2006)

Project management has different meaning for different people. Usually, people misunderstand the concept of project management. They feel that they are using project management techniques since there are ongoing projects in their organization. However, this is not true. Just running projects does not mean that project management techniques are being used. Project management techniques help in efficiently utilizing the resources allocated by creating horizontal and vertical flow of work. This does not mean that projects require the vertical structures to be broken down, this simply means that vertical structures are required to communicate horizontally to accomplish the project task. The vertical flow is taken care of by the manager and the horizontal flow by the project manager. These project managers make sure that there is a smooth flow of horizontal communication in the organization.  (Kerzner, 2006)
