Solution Description

Police subculture is defined as “ the unspoken values, norms, and ways of doing things that influence the day-to-day decisions and actions of law enforcement professionals“ (Elliot & Pollock, 2013, p. 242). While police subculture emphasizes being strong, loyal, and brave, it can also emphasize autonomy, misuse of authority, and violation of citizens’ rights in the name of searching out justice. Based on these points (presented by Elliott & Pollack, 2013), it is easy to see how an individual officer’s values might clash with those of his or her teammates.
