Several biological characteristics has contributed to the success of insects. Insects have the ability to fly at great speeds and distances, they have a small lightweight exoskeleton that needs few nutrients and they can reproduce rapidly. For an insect to evolve for many years they need a couple of strong characteristics. Flight, gives insects a highly effective mode of escape from predators that roamed the landscape. It was also an efficient means of transportation, allowing insect populations to expand more quickly into new habitats and exploit new resources. Reproduction, reproductive success is one of the most important measures of an organism's fitness. In insect populations, females often produce large numbers of eggs, most of the eggs hatch and the life cycle is relatively short often as little as 2-4 weeks. A typical female lays 100-500 eggs in her lifetime, but numbers in the thousands are not uncommon.
