1.      WK 5: Informal Discussion Question:

Folks, we've been reading about advertising this week, and your text covers the topic adequately, but I did want to add one thread of discussion for you as we look at the trend towards Internet advertising and to some extent, social media.

In your view, how would we measure effectiveness if Internet advertising? For that matter, how would we measure results?

ANSWER:

There are many methods of marketing on the internet. For example a person can use social media to advertise for its products. An example of using social media is using facebook. Facebook offers advertisement feature where a business can promote any product. The business can pay either per click for the advertisement or per 1000 impressions. Effectiveness is measured by the statistics provided by facebook such as the number of impressions, social reach, number of clicks and the number of page likes derived by the campaign. Other methods of marketing on the internet include renting space on popular websites to display banner ads. The payment for these ads is made in accordance with the size of the banner and the time it stays there. Google also provides advertisement options using adwords. The effectiveness is measured by retrieving statistics from google such as clicks and bounce rates.

2.      Additional Questions: Private Label - your thoughts from the marketer's perspective?

Good discussion, group. Putting on your consumer hats for just a moment (then we'll rip 'em right back off and put 'em on the hook on the wall): how do you all feel about bagging your own groceries? Does that change your image of the retailer? If so, how?

ANSWER:

Most of the customers are not used to bagging their own groceries. There are baggers who help bag the groceries once the grocery items are scanned and billed. This is not the case in many other countries such as Canada and Germany. People over there bag their groceries themselves. The reason why there are baggers in usa is probably because they are cheap to hire or maybe customers here don’t have the kind of time to bag their items. The image of the retailer changes if the customers have to bag their own items. They prefer to go to stores where they don’t need to bag. They donot like stores where they have to bag their own groceries.

  1. WK 5 DQ:

You are the marketing manager for a leading coffee chain. Your company has decided to expand into China. What are some environmental factors you must consider when marketing your coffee in China? Which one of these factors would have the largest effect on the company’s marketing strategy? Explain why.

ANSWER:

I will need to consider the culture and demographics of china when marketing coffee in China. I will need to know the preferences of Chinese people. I will need to know the flavors preferred by Chinese people which will help attract Chinese people to the product. The demographics will have an important effect on the marketing strategy of the company. For example if China has an ageing population, the advertisement will need to be more sober and less flashy. Another example is the income of the Chinese people. More disposable income will mean higher could be spent on expensive advertisement.
