Background

Throughout this course, you should complete the SLP before you undertake the case analysis. Before you begin the SLP, you need to read the background materials thoroughly.

Several of the background readings referred to gathering data to support the external analysis. Be sure to review those readings carefully so you know what kinds of data are used when conducting an external analysis. The purpose of this SLP is to develop the component of our strategic toolkit that relates to 5-Forces and PEST Analysis.  This is basic business research - a procedure that is part and parcel to the skill set of any MBA.

Assignment

The key aspects of this assignment that should be covered in your paper include:

·         Step One: The first step in an external analysis is to determine the industry to which your target business is classified. Usually this is done through North American Industry Classification System, or NAICS code.  Find a website or library reference that would enable you to determine the NAICS code of any business.

·         Step Two:  Research web and library sources that would give you the kinds of data you would need to conduct a Porter 5-Forces analysis. NOTE: We are not looking for sites that describe the 5-Forces, but sites that will provide you with data that you will be able to use to conduct your own external environmental analysis (e.g., to analyze the degree of competition in an industry, or the ease of substitution). You have undoubtedly run into such websites and publications before in your core courses. Typically, they are government sources providing statistical data, industry or trade magazines or journals, general business publications, finance websites, websites for trade associations, etc.

·         Step Three: This is a two-step process:

o    Determine what kinds of information you would need to evaluate each of Porter's forces (see the background materials), and then find a source that will give you that information. Find a minimum of 2 different sources for each of Porter's Forces; and

o    Research web and library sources that would give you data to support a PEST analysis. Find at least 2 different sources for each PEST variable.

·         Step Four:  For each source you have given above, provide a title and a URL (if applicable), and write a sentence or two explaining what information is available, how it would be useful in an external analysis, and critiquing the source (for example, what are the strengths and limitations of the source)?

Assignment Expectations

Your paper will be evaluated on the following points:

·         Precision - Does the paper address the question(s) or task(s)?

·         Breadth - Is the full breadth of the subject, i.e., all the keys to the assignment, addressed?

·         Depth - Does the paper address all elements of the topic in sufficient depth?   Does it include and apply the background readings and other background resources?  Are they included as references?

·         Application - Are the concepts of the module appropriately applied to the subject organization?

·         Organization - Is the paper organized in a coherent and systematic manner?  Are headings included in all papers greater than 2 pages?

·         Clarity - Is the writing clear and the concepts articulated properly?  Are paraphrasing and synthesis of concepts the primary means of response to the questions, or are thoughts conveyed through excessive use of quotations?

·         Referencing (citations and references) - Does the paper use citations and quotation marks where appropriate?  Are all references listed in the bibliography used and referred to via citation?

Tips and Suggestions

·         Brint.com is an excellent business search engine that can help you with all aspects of the SLP assignments for modules 2, 3, and 5.

·         Click here to access Dr. Flaschner's recommended search engines.

·         Still need help in researching companies and industries online? Click HERE for yet another tutorial.

·         You may be concise in your presentation of this SLP.  It does not have to follow the conventions of a written Case paper.  Tables or bulleted lists may help you present the information concisely and make it easy for the reader to quickly grasp the information.

·         Some people find this SLP assignment easier to conceptualize if they have a particular company in mind. This is fine, because the sources you find for a given company will probably have information for other companies as well.  Just be sure you keep the analysis focused on factors that will affect the entire industry - not just a specific company.

·         Include a cover and reference page, in addition to the above 2-page requirement.

·         Include headings for all papers greater than 2 pages (basically all papers), but do not use headings as "space fillers."

·         Cite AND reference all sources that you use in your work, including those that you do not quote but paraphrase.  This means include citations and quotation marks for direct quotes of more than 5 words, and citations for that information which you have "borrowed" or paraphrased from other sources.

·         Follow TUI Guidelines for well-written papers.  Please visit: http://www.tuiu.edu/files/Well-Written-Paper.pdf if you are unsure of what those guidelines are.

·         Submit your analysis to CourseNet by the end of this module.
