Background

Job burnout which is commonly described as a state of mental weariness and the antipode of work-engagement is well-known for being one of the most serious occupational hazards with which organizations have to deal.

Required Reading

Pines, A. M. (2005). The Burnout measure: Short version (BMS), International Journal of Stress Management, 12, 78–88.

Schaufeli, W. B., M. P. Leiter and C. Maslach (2009). Burnout: 35 Years of Research and Practice’, Career Development International, 14, 204–220.

Assignment

Start by reading the article by Schaufeli and his colleagues (2009) it will give you a broad perspective on the concept of burnout. Then, read the Pines (2005) article and assess your burnout level utilizing the Pines’ short burnout measure and answer the following questions. To assess your burnout score, complete the scale in the Appendix according to the instructions and calculate your average score.

1.     Based on Pines article, how would you interpret your burnout score? Is it relatively high or low?

2.     Discuss the implication of having high level of burnout based on Table 4 in Pines article.

3.     Based on Schaufeli et al.’s article, would you consider burnout a social problem or a medical diagnosis? Explain.

Your paper should be short (2-3 pages, not including the cover sheet, references, and assessment sheet) and to the point.  You are expected to deal with these issues in an integrated fashion, rather than treating them as a series of individual questions to be answered one by one and left at that.

 Keys to the Assignment

The key aspects of this assignment that should be covered in your paper include:

  • Assess your burnout score.
  • Based on Pines article, explain what your score mean?
  • Discuss the implication of having high level of burnout based on Table 4 in Pines article.
  • Based on Schaufeli et al.’s article, would you consider burnout a social problem or a medical diagnosis? Explain.

Assignment Expectations

Your paper will be evaluated on the following points:

  • Precision - Does the paper address the question(s) or task(s)?
  • Clarity - Is the writing clear and the concepts articulated properly? Are paraphrasing and synthesis of concepts the primary means of response to the questions, or are excessive use of quotations how thoughts are conveyed?
  • Breadth - Is the full breadth of the subject, i.e., the keys to the assignment, addressed?
  • Depth - Does the paper address the topic in sufficient depth, and include the background readings and other background resources as references?
  • Organization - Is the paper written well?  Does the grammar, spelling, and vocabulary appropriate to graduate level work?  Are headings included in all papers greater than 2 pages?
  • Referencing (citations and references) - Does the paper use citations and quotation marks where appropriate?  Are the references from the background readings and assignment used and properly cited?  Are all references listed in the bibliography used and referred to via citation?
  • Application - Are the concepts of the module appropriately applied to the subject organization?

Tips and Suggestions

Please note the following tips or suggestions:

  • Include a cover page and reference page, in addition to the 2-3 pages of analysis described above.
  • Include headings for all papers greater than 2 pages (basically all papers), but do not use headings as "space fillers."
  • Cite AND reference all sources that you use in your work, including those that you do not quote but paraphrase.  This means include citations and quotation marks for direct quotes of more than 5 words, and citations for that information which you have "borrowed" or paraphrased from other sources.
  • Follow TUI Guidelines for well-written papers.  (Click here if you are unsure of what those guidelines are).
