Background

In a sense, leadership resembles love: it is something most people believe they can recognize but often cannot define. What is leadership and what are the main differences between leadership and management? In this Module you will learn about the defining aspects of leadership, the history of research on leadership and contemporary theories of leadership.

Required Reading

House, R. J. &Aditya, R. N. (1997). The social scientific study of leadership: Quo Vadis?.Journal of Management, 23, 409-473.

Assignment

Read the House and Aditya article on leadership research. This article reviews the history of the study of leadership and the prevailing theories of leadership that have gain empirical support. If you want you can supplement your reading with items from the Optional Reading list or other outside reading you find useful. Then, write a 4-6 pages critique in which you will relate to the following questions and tasks:

1.     Define leadership and contrast leadership and management. What do you consider the 3 most important differences between leaders and managers? Substantiate your arguments with material from the House &Aditya article or other articles on the topic.

2.     Summarize the conclusions of trait theories of leadership. Also try to identify the main differences between past and more recent trait theories.

3.     Identify the central tenets and main limitations of behavioral theories.

4.     Describe the main contribution of contingency theory of leadership.

Keys to the Assignment

The key aspects of this assignment that should be covered in your paper include:

  • Define leadership and contrast leadership and management.
  • Summarize the conclusions of trait theories of leadership.
  • Identify the central tenets and main limitations of behavioral theories.
  • Describe the contribution of contingency theory of leadership.

Assignment Expectations

  • Your paper will be evaluated on the following seven (7) points:
    • Precision - Does the paper address the question(s) or task(s)?
    • Clarity - Is the writing clear and the concepts articulated properly? Are paraphrasing and synthesis of concepts the primary means of response to the questions, or are excessive use of quotations how thoughts are conveyed?
    • Breadth - Is the full breadth of the subject, i.e., the keys to the assignment, addressed?
    • Depth - Does the paper address the topic in sufficient depth, and include the background readings and other background resources as references?
    • Organization - Is the paper written well?  Does the grammar, spelling, and vocabulary appropriate to graduate level work?  Are headings included in all papers greater than 2 pages?
    • Referencing (citations and references) - Does the paper use citations and quotation marks where appropriate?  Are the references from the background readings and assignment used and properly cited?  Are all references listed in the bibliography used and referred to via citation?
    • Critical thinking - Is the subject thought about critically, i.e., accurately, logically, relevantly, and precisely?

Tips and Suggestions

Please note the following tips or suggestions:

  • Include a cover page and reference page, in addition to the 4-5 pages of analysis described above.
  • Include headings for all papers greater than 2 pages (basically all papers)
  • Cite AND reference all sources that you use in your work, including those that you do not quote but paraphrase.  This means include citations and quotation marks for direct quotes of more than 5 words, and citations for that information which you have "borrowed" or paraphrased from other sources.
  • Follow TUI Guidelines for well-written papers.  (Click here if you are unsure of what those guidelines are).
