Background

One of the most acceptable definitions of job satisfaction describes it as “a pleasurable or positive emotional state resulting from the appraisal of one’s job or job experiences” (Locke, 1976. p. 1304). There is confusion and debate among managers and practitioners on the topic of employee attitudes and job satisfaction. For example, whereas some managers and practitioners think that “Happy employees are productive employees”, others believe that “Happy employees are not productive employees.” These and other conflicting statements are often made by HR professionals and managers in organizations. The purpose of this case is to provide you with research based knowledge that will help you achieve a better understanding of what is known today about job satisfaction.

Required Reading

Saari L, Judge TA. (2004). Employee attitudes and job satisfaction.Human Resource Management, 43, 395–407.

Assignment

Read the Saari& Judge article on employee attitudes and job satisfaction. This article identifies three major gaps between HR practice and the scientific research in the area of employee attitudes in general and the most focal employee attitude in particular—job satisfaction: (1) the causes of employee attitudes, (2) the results of positive or negative job satisfaction, and (3) how to measure and influence employee attitudes. If you want you can supplement your reading with items from the Optional Reading list or other outside reading you find useful. Then, write a 4-6 pages critique in which you will relate to the following points:

1.    Explain in your own words what the 3 gaps between HR practice and the scientific research are.

2.    Explain how and to which extent research on job satisfaction resolves each of the three gaps. Try to be as specific as you can in your answers.

3.    Where do you think the gaps still exist and how future research on job satisfaction can help to close these gaps? Use at least two examples to substantiate your answer.

Keys to the Assignment

The key aspects of this assignment that should be covered in your paper include:

·         Identify the three major gaps between HR practice and the scientific research on job satisfaction.

·         Explain how research on job satisfaction resolves each of the three gaps.

·         Where do you think the gaps still exist and how research on job satisfaction can help close these gaps?

Assignment Expectations

·         Your paper will be evaluated on the following seven (7) points:

o    Precision - Does the paper address the question(s) or task(s)?

o    Clarity - Is the writing clear and the concepts articulated properly? Are paraphrasing and synthesis of concepts the primary means of response to the questions, or are excessive use of quotations how thoughts are conveyed?

o    Breadth - Is the full breadth of the subject, i.e., the keys to the assignment, addressed?

o    Depth - Does the paper address the topic in sufficient depth, and include the background readings and other background resources as references?

o    Organization - Is the paper written well?  Does the grammar, spelling, and vocabulary appropriate to graduate level work?  Are headings included in all papers greater than 2 pages?

o    Referencing (citations and references) - Does the paper use citations and quotation marks where appropriate?  Are the references from the background readings and assignment used and properly cited?  Are all references listed in the bibliography used and referred to via citation?

o    Critical thinking - Is the subject thought about critically, i.e., accurately, logically, relevantly, and precisely?

Tips and Suggestions

Please note the following tips or suggestions:

·         Include a cover page and reference page, in addition to the 4-5 pages of analysis described above.

·         Include headings for all papers greater than 2 pages (basically all papers)

·         Cite AND reference all sources that you use in your work, including those that you do not quote but paraphrase.  This means include citations and quotation marks for direct quotes of more than 5 words, and citations for that information which you have "borrowed" or paraphrased from other sources.

·         Follow TUI Guidelines for well-written papers.  (Click here if you are unsure of what those guidelines are).

Submit your analysis to CourseNet by the end of this module
