Read the Redefining Diversity article in Understanding and Managing Diversity. Thomas presents eight actions in this article. How could these eight actions be applied to situations other than diversity? Which of these actions do you feel are the most effective? How can you improve implementing these eight skills when dealing with a situation?

The eight actions are:

1.  Include/Exclude
2.  Deny
3.  Assimilate
4.  Supress
5.  Isolate
6.  Tolerate
7.  Build Relationships
8.  Foster Mutual Adaptation

These actions can apply to just about all aspects in life.  We tend to exclude or include a number of variables in every day life, planning for a particular day can include or exclude many variables, Denying issues or problems is a way that some people cope with things they don't understand or want to deal with.  Assimilation is something I use as a Mom all the time, it's my way or now way sometimes because I am the dominating factor! :)  Suppression also as a Mom is something I use, there are times when I have to bite my tongue and let my children learn on their own.  With Isolation, I believe that when we are in contact with a set of diverse issues it's best sometimes to set those issue aside to review the bigger picture to work together.  Toleration is something I believe we all do at some point or another.  We tolerate the friend we wish our kid wasn't hanging around with, we tolerate our own spouses and their quirks or ideas about thing, even when we don't agree.  Building relationships is a societal norm.  We all build relationships, even in this class we are beginning to understand one another and build on the common ground of learning about diversity.  Fostering mutual adaption is the same as cooperating or collaborating.  We work together to set up a new culture for ourselves within our community.

The actions I believe to be the most effective are that of building relationships and fostering mutual adaptation.  These two actions fosters a new culture where everyone can be on the same page and stepping stones.  I believe that using these eight actions can improve on any situation, as long as all are in agreement to it.  With the very diverse workplaces we have now it would be advantageous for a group to establish a new set of values and ethics to be able to work together, communicate, and understand one another.
