What do the following terms mean to you? Respond in your own words, but use course material to validate your thoughts.

·         Cultural norms

·         Cultural diversity

·         Values

·         Ethics

·         Workplace diversity

Have your thoughts about these terms changed as you have grown older? How? Do you think the meanings of these words have changed in society since the 1950s? Since the 1960s? How?

The following terms mean:

Cultural norms: this means the behavior patterns, rules, and guidelines set for any given society, whether it be a community, workplace, or family.

Cultural Diversity: Well, I believe this to be the different  types groups within a society, community, workplace, or family.  This can also be race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and any other sub-culture living or working together.

Values: We are all born into families, just as diverse as any culture.  Within this family matrix we do learn values or ways to believe, values are the issues we hold dear and have a strong opinion on.  For example, one of my values is to not smoke or drink, it is not only a familial value but a religious one as well.  Many cultures value's do have to do with a belief system and how they view themselves and the world.  It's important to note that values are a consistent belief system.

Ethics:  I just finished taking ethics and compliance training within my company.  I work for a pharmaceutical company.   Ethics is close to the term of Values in that it is a belief system. Ethics take it one step further by also making it a moral philosophy.  It is the concept of right and wrong behavior for any given society.

Workplace Diversity: With our workplaces going global, workplace diversity is very important in today's world.  The word "Diversity" means different.  So, the Workplace is full of different people from all walks of life, be it race, gender, sexual orientation, and religion.  We all perform, communicate, and learn in different ways as well.  It is safe to say that the workplace is a melting pot for diversity.

My thoughts on these terms have changed as I have grown older.  As a young person I don not believe I understood the importance or the difference of values and ethics.  I believed them to be the same.  My first job was in the University I attended.  It was the first time I realized that diversity even existed.  Before that, I thought everyone believed just like I did.  As I have continue in the workforce from the late 1980's through the 1990's the workplace has continued to change.  The company I work for now is sanctioned by the U.S. Government and must follow stringent rules and policies, so ethics is very important to them so that they may comply with these rules and regulations and stay in business.
According to our reading for this week, in "Understanding and Managing Diversity,"  it states the Hewlett-Packard Diversity Value Chain and how much it has changed from the 70's to now.  In the 70's the value was in equal opportunities, in the 80's affirmative action, to the 90's with workplace diversity, and now to global diversity.
The internet has given us some freedoms in the case of where we work.  We now work with people from all over the world.  Their cultural norms, values, and ethics may differ from ours and we now have to learn to understand one another and communicate much more so than in past years.
My husband works for a global company, at any given time he can be in a conference call with people from China, Australia, England, and Africa.  He jokes that he cannot always understand the people he is talking to anymore than they can understand him.  Over the years in his job, he has had to take cultural diversity training so that he and the other people all over the globe that he works with can communicate and understand one another.
