Due Week 2 Day 5

Based on the assigned readings for Week Two, answer the following questions:  As companies are impacted and/or influenced by social events, they are sometimes forced/required to change how they operate, including social, moral and ethical responsibilities.  A) Do you think this is a positive or negative? B) Why; and C) Do you think social pressures should influence businesses?  Be specific.

I feel a change in the way an organization operates due to social events can be both negative and positive.  The Johnson Controls case study in chapter 4 is a good example.  In order to protect unborn children they tried to exclude women from specific work involving the batteries.  This, however, was seen as denying equal opportunity rights for women.  This ultimately led to the company ruling in favor of an unborn child in a way.  They came up with a policy that stated a woman had to have proof that she could not bear children.  On one hand it seems unethical to exclude all women from a particular job, but on the other it’s understandable since the company is considering the well fair of the child, and also protecting themselves from possible future law suites.

An example of how companies can be affected by outside factors would be the Enron scandal.  I would assume this forced other companies to be extra careful in their business dealings.  It most likely even created more business for the other accounting firms that were around when Arthur Andersen was dissolved.

Response 2

There is no doubt that the world is ever-evolving. Everyone, not just businesses, have had to change - to adapt - to the way that all events come with global consequences. Take a lot at the global economy and how every major country has been impacted. On one hand, being forced to adapt to the world helps to foster more competition which usually benefits the consumer. I think as economies and companies adapt an open-disclosure/transparency policy then fewer consumers and companies will be hurt financially.

I think if the social pressure being applied is aimed at benefiting the global consumer then pressure should be applied. Social pressure has been a force for many years which drives positive change. Positive change usually helps all involved even when the benefits are not initially clear. Let's take a look at the not-so-new push for companies to go green. Organizations like Green Peace and others have been pushing for more conservation of Earth's natural resources, and the creation of alternative sources of energy. Al Gore has been actively pushing this same cause for the better part of 20 years now. Today, thanks in large part to the social pressure which has been applied for nearly 30 years, businesses and consumers alike work hard to reduce the carbon footprint being left behind. Social pressure at its finest!

Response 3

Based on the reading for week two, sometimes there are situation where companies are impacted by social events. I think that in the situation where companies are forced to change because of social events it has a negative effect on the company. After a company is used to operating a certain way, changing things is a pain. Eventhough change is very common in today's companies, if you ask employees they will tell you that change is frustrating. I do not think that social pressure should influence business but unfortunately it does. For instance, if you look at the whole Tiger Woods fiasco. Look back at Tigers past accomplishments and his achievements He is by far the best golfer to ever play the game and has made his  endorsements look good for years and years. Because of his personal life issues it has impacted the companies that endorsed him. So all of his endorsements if they haven't yet already dropped him they will.
