Based on the assigned readings for Week One, answer the following questions:   A) When working for a company/corporation, whose ethical guidelines do you follow, the company’s or your own?  B)  Should the two be similar?  If you agree/disagree, please provide an example and be specific.

When working for a company I follow both, my ethics and the companies.  The company I work for provides an ethics guide and all employees have to take a quick quiz on it yearly.  It is important to follow these guides in order to stay out of trouble.  Unfortunately, working in corporate america hasn't always been the most ethical experience in my own view.  There is a lot of back stabbing and caddyness that goes on.  This is when my own views on ethics come into play.  I will not step on someone else to get ahead or take part in talking about others the way many of my coworkers do.  I stay neutral in most situations and am able to see both sides of a story.  I think it's important to not loose yourself and your own values with the hopes that it will make you more well liked or move up with in the company quicker.

If you want to be successful in a professional environment you must have your own set ethics. I have learned that you must continue to have the same ethics for the entire time you are working at your company. A lot of people start to get more conformable when working with the same people for a long time. That is okay but you must continue to follow the same rules. I agree that the same ethics for a business and individual are similar. I just think that if you have good ethics personally, you won't have a problem following your gut felling and complying with company ethics guidelines.

Response 3

I suppose I would follow the guidelines which will ensure that I am not compromising my belief structure, nor would land me in trouble with my employer or the law. I do not believe the two ethical guidelines will always be similar. There are firms (like large insurance companies who refuse to pay out on legitimate claims) who will bypass the ethical path for the sake of profits. These firms would certainly have a problem with me because I would not be able to follow their guidelines. People come first with me. The ethical standard of that firm would not be in line with
