Evaluate how effective the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has been in protecting consumer privacy and targeting deceptive and unfair trade practices on the Internet. Support your opinion with specifics.
The FTC takes complaints about businesses that don't make good on their promises or cheat people out of money. These complaints are investigated and used to eliminate unfair business practiices. The FTC has been very effective at targeting these practices.
TRUSTe, Inc., a major provider of privacy certifications for online businesses has just agreed to settle with the FTC. The FTC investigated complaints and charged this company with deceiving consumers about it's recertification program. TRUSTe provides seals to online businesses that meet specific requirements for consumer privacy programs that it administers. This seal from TRUSTe assures consumers that a business' privacy pratice/policy is in compliance with specific standards. TRUSTe promised to hold companies accountable for protecting consumer privacy. In order to do this TRUSTe is supposed to conduct annual recertifications of companies that hold the TRUSTe seal. It was found that from 2006 until 2013, TRUSTe failed to conduct the annual recertifications of these companies, but continued to state on their website that these companies holding the TRUSTe seal had received their yearly certifications. In short TRUSTe was misleading consumers who depended on their privacy seal as a way to determine if it was safe to do business with certain online companies.
