Describe an ethical issue you observe in our society that concerns you. What can you do to address that problem?

According to (Dictionary.com) “ethics are that branch of philosophy dealing with values relating to human conduct, with respect to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness and badness of the motives and ends of such actions.”  Watching the news a couple of months ago I saw something that shocked me. A teacher had a love relationship with her student; the student’s family found out and reported her. More than having a “relationship” I think this is harassment towards the student. Taking in mind this student was a minor she is responsible and should be taken accountable for said embarrassing and disgusting situation. Where are some teacher’s ethics today? I believe that the teacher's role is to guide, provide access to information, and promote respect for all people and all things.  I believe that each student is a unique person who need to growth intellectually, emotionally, physically and socially.  In addition, I believe each student has the potential to bring something unique and special to the world.  The instructor is to stimulate and encourage thinking rather than to provide answers and resolve problems.  I believe that success – whether personal or professional – is generated from three critical building blocks: knowledge, critical thinking, and curiosity. The role of a teacher is as one of transferring a fundamental knowledge of course content to students while cultivating their critical thinking skills through the application of theory and concepts to economic, and industry related issues.  The teacher serves as a role model.  Helping students to develop a deep love and respect for themselves, others, and their environment occurs through an open sharing of ideas and a judicious approach to discipline.

I have seen this not only in teachers, also in politics, at work to get a better position, etc. People have lost their self respect and prefer to pass by their ethics and values which is more important to be more recognized and more profitable. Is money and respect what is all about?

I see the only way to address these issues is not letting any of these cases fall, applying all the weight of justice and penalizing said persons to lose license, etc. Ethics and respect is something you learn, you build and even though it may take you all your life to build it you can lose it in a matter of seconds.

1. How would you define ethics? Discuss what we mean today when we talk about an ‘ethics violation.’ How do we tend to address ethical problems or challenges today?

2. Have you ever experienced a situation in which you observed someone engaged in some behavior that they seemed to think was completely acceptable but you believed was ‘wrong’?

3. Explain how can people approach the same ethical issue with different solutions?

I define ethics as simple as what is bad and what is good. It is a thin line between what is right or wrong to do. Ethics are in everywhere and everything we do. We must make decisions, perform task, etc. and we are constantly using our judgment to decide if we should do it or not. When we talk about ethics violations we might think about a doctor who for example gave a patient a prescription or recommendation or maybe has his practice without a license, or even a police officer that has to accept when a chief officer is on the streets meeting with his lover while on work hours, an attorney who flirts with the jury to win his case, etc. etc. Most of the people address ethical problems by confronting the person, filing a code of ethics violation complaint against said person.

When I was working for a bank in the legal division we used to receive subpoenas and legal requests of information all the time. I was not in charge of this but was in charge of signing for them when the responsible person was not around. I knew there was an investigation regarding someone this person knew very closely and she used this to protect said person and not provide all the accounts this person was including houses, etc. She gave the officers what she felt to. I knew it was wrong, I didn’t agree but I couldn’t say anything because I did not work closely with her, I did know she had done something wrong because I was able to see every customer’s information on my computer and often she asked me to make copies of the files, etc. Long story short I was only 17 years old and was afraid to talk and lose my job.

The best solution is to be ethical yourself, follow the rules, and go by the book. Having an ethics code is going to help the company or organization stay clear on what is permitted in terms of behavior and what is not. The best thing to do it to have a professional relationship at work, hold information confidential unless authorized to release it, avoid all conflicts of interest with clients and employers if possible, but when they are unavoidable, disclose that conflict, avoid soliciting, accepting, or offering any gratuity or inappropriate benefit connected to a potential or existing business or working relationship. Also accepting work reviews as a means to improve performance, honoring contracts and assigned responsibilities, accepting decisions of employers and clients, unless they are illegal or unethical and acknowledge and accept rules about the personal use of employer resources will make the difference and will make you stand out from the crowd.
