What are some of the most effective ways for companies to monitor employee motivation, satisfaction, and performance? What are its advantages and disadvantages?

When it comes to monitoring success, it depends on the job type you are performing. Some jobs like Sales are easier to measure because the employee is either meeting financial targets (numbers) or not. If you are assessing employees in a factory for example maybe you would base that assessment on the results of audits, customer satisfaction surveys and feedback from their bosses or direct supervisors in terms of productivity and quality of work.

To monitor employee motivation and satisfaction I would suggest an appraisal meeting in means of communicating and documenting an assessment because, although you do ask how the employee thinks they are performing, you have already done your research on their performance and you are communicating it to them, rather than finding out how well they are doing in the meeting. This way you can both monitor the employee’s performance and give them correct feedback, correct any issues, encourage him to change and improve and congratulate him on what he is doing right.

Evaluations will provide feedback to the employees to help them in the development of career management plan and can help them to identify needs of training programs. Feedback is required to be done as rapidly as possible. The evaluation should be done every six months at least. “Also, the employee should be able to show how they have improved in the improvement areas listed, (Cascio, 2006).”

In an Excel spreadsheet a scorecard system can be created to reflect the above information up to date. This information will contain goals established by the company, if they have been met, how much time did it took the employee and how satisfactory was the outcome. Also this document will include any rewards, memos or sanctions given to the employee as well as behavior problems, tardiness, absences, etc. Keeping this information up to date the company will be able to reward this employee on time for goals met.

Another ways to monitor employee satisfaction at work is by doing random anonymous surveys, focus groups, meetings with key people at the company, direct talk with these group of people or a motivational audit. “A Motivational Audit identifies the changing nature of human motivation rather than fixed personality traits. The latter are best investigated through personality or psychometric tests, (Optimal Action).”
