In what specific ways may an individual influence an organization through his or her management and leadership skills?

According to my research the basis of good leadership is honorable character and selfless service to the organization. The employee sees everything the leader does and it affects him. It can either affect in a good way or a bad way. Influence is everything, employees look up to leaders and they tend to imitate the actions. I like to compare it to a mother and her child; the child will most likely follow the mother’s steps or try to imitate her actions in terms of reactions, gestures, ethics, beliefs, etc.

A respected leader will most likely focus of what his foundations are such as beliefs and characteristics, what he knows in terms of his experience, what he has learned and studied what he can contribute to the company to implement a new plan, or motivate employees or even provide good direction to them.

People want to follow people with good sense of direction, good actions and have proven achieved goals according to their vision.

According to a study by the Hay Group, a global management consultancy, there are 75 key components of employee satisfaction (Lamb, McKee, 2004). They found that a leader can impact an organization by:

  • Building trust and confidence in top leadership was the single most reliable predictor of employee satisfaction in an organization.
  • Providing and encouraging effective communication by leadership in three critical areas was the key to winning organizational trust and confidence:
    1. Helping employees understand the company's overall business strategy.
    2. Helping employees understand how they contribute to achieving key business objectives.
    3. Sharing information with employees on both how the company is doing and how an employee's own division is doing - relative to strategic business objectives.

I discussed about good things and influences a leader can bring to an organization but let me give some examples on bad behaviors employees can start to have by having bad examples at the office. An example is a manager that gets in late, employees robbing from the petty cash, not following dress codes at the office, using improper language, offending people, etc.  These behaviors can affect the company and even more if the employee sees they are not being corrected. A leader must set a good example at all times.
