By reading the Common Criteria Portal, the purpose of the Common Criteria for information technology security evaluation (CC) is to offer the widest available security for IT systems and the products.  The security measures that are taken to defend these products and systems include an assessment by an independent licensed laboratory to decide the security properties. 

Supporting documents is used to describe how the assessment methods are useful when determining certain technologies.  Certificate authorizing schemes are the certificate of the security properties that have been evaluated.  CC differs from the trusted computer security assessment systems which is the standard for the Department of Defense.  The criteria standards for evaluating the computer security on the computer system are sensitive information and are classified.
