Write your essay in third person, include at least two short quotations to prove your points, and include in-text (parenthetical) citationsfor all material derived from a source. Be sure to submit the draft to Turnitin.com and correct any plagiarism before submitting the essay to me for a grade. Essays should be approximately 750 words, but no more than 1,000 words. Your goal is to be comprehensive, yet concise. Include a Works Cited page with sources listed in MLA format. You do not need to submit the Works Cited to Turnitin.com.

This essay is worth 100 points based on the following components:
Organization (introduction, thesis, paragraphs for points, conclusion) 30

Documentation (in text citations and Works Cited) 20
Your assignment is to select one reason that answers the question, “Why should we study the past?” Prepare a 750-1000 word essay in which you explain your reason and reasoning for studying the past.
Use at least three paintings/mosaics, sculptures, structures, inventions/developments, historical events/empires, or literature to illustrate your answer to the question. Be sure to draft a strong thesis that clearly states your answer to the question. There is no need to state the question. You may not use a work that we have or will study in class, but you may use a related work. For instance, the Justinian and Theodora mosaics are off limits, but other mosaics of the period are acceptable. Refer to your study guides for chapters 11 and 12 to identify the works that we will study at the end of the course.
