Post your 100 to 150 word response to this question: How are newer religions different from older ones?  How are they similar?  Note that this is a discussion on new religions (movements) not on new individual churches.

I believe the biggest difference would have to be modernization. Advancements in technology have enabled religions to disseminate their beliefs to a new audience, and rather quickly.  In the past, religions where typically confined to a geographical location that had ancestral ties to that religion. Over time, those religions some religions practiced in other areas, and became sects of the original practice. However, they took on traits of religions that were native to the new area.  Now every religion has the ability to share their point of view with neighboring countries. Television and the internet are good examples of how technology has changed religion at a global level.

With globalization religions try to deny the validity of other religions, which causes tension between religious cultures.  Religion has become a big business in the twenty-first century and with big business comes politicians and lobbyist. Fundamentalists try to use their social statue in society to promote a certain religion or congregation. Some fundamentalist are driven by the belief in their faith and others are self motivated.

Modernists and Fundamentalists have driven what are the new religious movements. New religions are popping in the 10’s of thousands across the world. The new religion movement is mostly driven by individual motives or individuals creating a religion so it is more suited for their modern society point of views. Religions are still similar in the way they practice their religion, Christians still gather in congregations each Sunday and Muslims face Mecca to pray.

Some similarities remain, for the most part, they believe in a higher power, and while their practices may differ, they all have religious practices. Newer religions have take ideals from older religions, therefore inner connecting them.
