What events and figures have shaped the development of Islam in the United States?  Mention at least one event and one person - ideally from two different decades.

There are numerous figures and events that have contributed to the development of Islam in the United States. The Muslim immigrants from 1960 all the way through to the present generation are a main area of focus. Many thousands of Muslims from all over the world have immigrated to the United States and have established places of worship and communities.  Malcolm X and Elijah Muhammad are by far some of the most important figures that helped shape the development of Islam.

Surely an entire research paper could be devoted to this topic. The Nation of Islam is possibly the greatest influence on the development of Islam in the United States. It was founded by Master Fard Muhammad in 1930, but it was the Honorable Elijah Muhammad that let up until 1975. The Nation of Islam is now headed by Minister Louis Farrakhan (n.d.).

Farrakhan also contributed to Islam though a worldwide Islamic newspaper, The Final Call, the repurchase of Mosque Maryam in Chicago, the POWER concept of 1985, and the 1994 leading of two thousand African-Americans to Ghana for the Nation of Islam's first International Saviour's Day. Over two million people were drawn to the Million Man March of 1995 which was led by Minister Farrakhan. October 16th was named as a Holy Day of Atonement, Reconciliation and Responsibility (n.d.).

There is so much that could be said about Minister Farrakhan, Malcolm X, and their contributions to The Nation of Islam, and certainly The Nation of Islam is not the only organization to have an influence on Islam in the United States. We must also remember the terrorist attacks of September 11th and how the actions of Osama bin Laden and George Bush have influenced the way United States citizens perceive Muslims.
