How has Christianity, a faith based on the teachings of a single text (the Bible) divided into so many denominations?  The text focuses on one reason, but there are at least 6 distinct reasons.  Try to come up with at least two.

Christian denominations developed partly because some teachings were named after the Christian teachers. For example, Calvin (Presbyterians), Luther, Zwingli, etc., sought after truth and in no way are considered divided.  They all broke away from Roman Catholicism because of huge deviations ofRomefrom God's Holy Word as found in the Bible. The Christian message of Salvation taught today is universally the same, and the very minor slants in denominations in no way pervert the truth as found in the Bible.

The Bible is surely not a single text. There are differences between versions when compared to one another, such as the new King James Version, and New American Standard. I do believe that man has been the reason for the change of religion, doctrines and practices; this is because of the variety of interpretations. We take what is there and make what we want of it. One of the best examples I can give for this is the exclusion of the Gnostic texts because of conflict with already-established beliefs.

As time passes, change is inevitable. People have adopted Martin Luther’s though process, and are questioning the lessons being taught to them. Protestant denominations developed because Martin Luther rejected such things as spiritual authority, religious pilgrimages, and the earning of spiritual merit (Fisher, 2005, p. 324).

I believe that ultimately Christianity has split because of power struggles and matters of convenience.
