How do contemporary Buddhist practices reflect the foundations of the religion?

I believe that modern Buddhist practices are still centered on the basic ideas proposed by Buddha. They continue to seek enlightenment through meditation. Acceptance of the suffering in life and practicing peaceful meditation are both reflections of the foundations of the religion. One area that stuck out to me the most was “Most westerners who are adopting Buddhist practices are living in highly materialistic rather than monastic settings. And in their impatience to get results, many keep shopping around from one teacher to the next rather than persisting over a long time in one path” (Fisher, 2005). I think this is a deviation from what Buddha had taught. I think it is also a product of our society, we want everything now.

I do however, find it interesting that most “Eastern” religious concepts attempt to bring one closer to achieving divinity while most “European-based” religious concepts continue to put the divine far above us and remind us of just how unworthy we are.
