What principle should the HRM department have to ensure work efficiency while protecting employee
privacy?

I do think employers have the right to monitor employees' computers. Employees should have no
expectation of privacy on company computers. Companies should make employees aware of the policies
regarding monitoring of company computers and employee privacy. Employees are hired to do a job
and the computer is a tool to help them get that job done. Often, employees spend time doing things
on the computer other than their work. We've all seen the person playing solitaire or shopping eBay.
Many companies have filters to prevent employees from surfing unacceptable websites, such as porn
sites, but employees can still access their personal emails, surf other types if sites, and go on Facebook.
Companies have the right to monitor employee computers because employees are using company
resources on company time for personal use. The company is spending time and money on employees
and expects them to be productive. When an employee spends time on their computer for personal use
it's comparable to that employee taking extended breaks or lunches while still on the clock and being
paid to produce for the company. On the flip side, companies usually do permit limited personal use and
as long as employees aren't abusing the privilege. Personal emails and checking Facebook are the most
popular non-company uses of computers.
