recruiting the best candidates for the position. The training and development function "attempts to
reach the goal of having competent, adapted employees who possess the up-to-date skills, knowledge,
and abilities needed to perform their current jobs more successfully" (DeCenzo & Robbins, 2007. p.
39). The motivation function is to encourage employees with the ability and willingness to perform the
job to do so with a high level of energy. The motivation function involves compensation, incentives,
benefits, and rewards. The maintenance function is just as the name implies in that it is "concerned with
maintaining employees’ commitment and loyalty to the organization" (DeCenzo & Robbins, 2007. p. 41).

I think the maintenance function is the most important because it involves retaining qualified employees
who are happy and loyal to the company. Qualified, competent employees are of great value to a
company and the backbone of a productive workforce. In my previous work experiences, the employees
who have been with the company for many years have the most knowledge and experience and
naturally train the new employees. In their years with the company they have also developed a
relationship with not only their department and managers, but with the other departments and those
