Research the recent legalization of marijuana in several states within the USA. What factors prompted its legalization?
Marijuana (cannabis) is a green, brown or gray mixture of dried, shredded leaves, stems, seeds and flowers of the hemp plant Cannabis sativa. Marijuana is used as a psychoactive recreational drug, for certain medical ailments and for religious and spiritual purposes (Kleiman, 2019).
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), marijuana is the most abused drug in the US. Many states in the US have now legalized marijuana for medical or recreational use. However, according to federal law, the possession of marijuana (cannabis) is still illegal in the US, except within approved research settings (Kleiman, 2019).
The factors prompted its legalization: 1) Public health to ensure that the potential public health risks do not outweigh the possible clinical benefits, states that legalize marijuana should invest in public education campaigns that address substance use disorders and their long-term impacts, marijuana poisoning, and other harms. 2) public safety Legalizing marijuana may reduce criminal justice caseloads, incarcerations, and the police resources needed for marijuana related offenses, which has both economic and societal implications. 3) Tax revenue will increase with a sales tax rate (Mathmatica, 2017).
What have been the negative consequences (if any) to individuals, families, and communities since the legalization?
Marijuana affects perception and judgment and is associated with low achievement. Marijuana also causes memory and learning problems, which can especially affect those in high school or college. Marijuana use can also cause delinquent behavior, aggression, rebellion and poor relationships with family, especially parents (Condron, 2020).
What have been the positive consequences (if any) to individuals, families, and communities since the legalization?
Proponents of legalizing recreational marijuana say it will add billions to the economy, create hundreds of thousands of jobs, free up scarce police resources, and stop the huge racial disparities in marijuana enforcement. They contend that regulating marijuana will lower street crime, take business away from the drug cartels, and make marijuana use safer through required testing, labeling, and child proof packaging (PROCON.ORG, 2018).
What is your personal position about legalizing marijuana?
Alcohol is 50 times more dangerous than Marijuana. Think about Colorado, recreational use of pot has been legal there for years now and there has been no problems because of it. The accidents are up everywhere because people can't put their phones down for 20 min to get where they’re going without running someone over or be in an accident. The point is pot should be legal. It's the best pain killer in the world and doesn't come with the terrible physical addiction as opiates do and will increase the economy and create too many jobs for people.
