Solution Description

In the Department of Justice, there is a web of many different agencies that are assigned with protecting and serving this country. One subdivision of this department is the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP),which was created in 1930. This division is charged with supervision of all federal prisons systems. This division has grown overtime to accommodate for the increase in the number of prisons that were built. When the division was established, there were 11 federal penal facilities. By 1940, the number of federal prisons that the agency was in charged of had tripled ("Allgov.com.", 2014). Then, the population among these facilities stabilized for a while, trending minor gains and decreases.

In the 1980's, new legislation, policy, procedures, and sentencing guidelines produced an increase in the federal prisons' population. "The Sentencing Reform Act of 1984" changed the way the Judicial department conducted business. With the changes that made in sanctions for defendants, disbandment of parole, minimum sentence statues and the reduction of "good time credits," the prison population doubled. ("Allgov.com.", 2014). This situation caused the BOP division to grow again to meet the demands of the federal penal system. In the 1990, there was another increase in the prison population that correlated to the government's action in the "War on Drugs", and again the BOP agency grew again to manage their charges ("Allgov.com.", 2014). This division has shown that despite the events that trigger inmate population growth, the BOP will grow and adapt to perform their duties.
