HIPPA was designed to protect peoples' private health information, ensure health insurance coverage for workers and their families should they lose their jobs, uncover fraud and abuse, and create standards for electronic transmission of healthcare transactions.

HIPPA is very specific about maintaining the privacy of a patient and the information gathered about the patient or any person receiving medical care and treatment in which they pay for. This information could a valuable piece of information to many such as lawyers, insurance providers and pharmaceutical companies. If a person in a physicians office has access to sensitive information regarding a patient's care and treatment and the patient is involved in a law suit stemming from a fall at a place of business, the fact the patient may have suffered from a similar injury prior to the existing injury may cause the law firm to try to make a case claiming the injury was preexisting. This information cannot be released without the specific consent of the patient. It is imperative that the office does not release any information about this patient unless the patient has consented to the release of such information and there should be specific dates on this request. The office personnel's first concern should be to protect the patient's privacy before complying with any request for information. The same holds true for anyone discussing any patient in a conversation. Any information regarding a patient is privileged even if the supermarket cashier says, "I saw that Mr. Wright was in your office today". The fact that Mr. Wright was in the office should not even be a topic of the conversation.
