A lot of people would say that the biggest, and to some the most important question would be, “what is the meaning of life?” Though the answer would vary from person to person, the general idea of what makes up life, or the properties of life would stay the same. Within all living things, it would be considered common knowledge that there are several elements at work to make a particular organism function and react the ways in which they do. Though complicated in structure down to the molecular level, there are surprisingly only nine notable properties of life.
In this paper we will cover in depth what the properties of life are, as well as the difference(s) between living organisms’ compared to non-living organisms. There are some things that are not considered to be a living organism but can still carry out functions of living organisms, an example being evolution; we will also cover how this is possible.
The nine properties or characteristics of life are “Order, metabolism, movement (motility), responsiveness, reproduction, development, heredity, evolution and adaptation”. (J. Postlethwait, 2011, p. 4)In sequential order these characteristics make sense, when out of order, the process of life, living, and evolution cannot exist. To understand the importance of each of the nine characteristics, we need to know and understand the definition of each one.
Order by definition means, “A precise arrangement of structural units and activities; also in taxonomy, a taxonomical group comprising members of similar families”.
