Explain how cooperative learning can improve academic performance in a diverse classroom. What is the teacher’s role in a cooperative learning classroom? What is the student’s role? Provide a cooperative learning lesson that will foster a sense of community and respect diversity
Cooperative learning groups are an excellent teaching technique that fosters interaction and dialogue among classmates. Too many times a teacher may monopolize the discussion and does not engage the students in academic oral language which ELL students need to practice daily (Rothenberg & Fisher, 2007). Cooperative learning can benefit the entire classroom because through “social interaction” it encourages “higher mental functions such as reasoning, comprehension, and critical thinking” that “originate in social interactions and are then internalized by individuals” (Woolfolk, 2001, p. 341). It is important that all students participate in a cooperative learning environment and that everyone’s voice be heard.
