May - August: What is the connection between language and literacy development in the first and second language? How will you help immigrant students get on a path to learning English in your classroom?
Each language has its own unique aspects in any specific culture. Take for example, the Arabic language; it does not have the sound “b” as English does and so Arab learners have a difficult time with differentiating words with the sound “P” and “B”. This is when ESL teachers come in to play and help lower level students with letter formation and the phonemic awareness of each indusial sound of the alphabet.
