The manner in which educators use assessments needs to change to meet the demands of the 21 century
Matters in Assessments and Evalutions of Students
EDU650: Teaching Learning and Leading in the 21st Century
Completing assessments is a major aspect of a school environment to measure students’ performances in schools; it is embedded in the system. Therefore, planning and then completing an assessment must have its purpose in mind. Teachers will then reflect on the results of the assessments in hopes of enriching the quality of their methods. The following write up will illustrate the strong contribution evaluations and assessments have on the educational systems.
Analyze the roles of assessment and evaluation in school improvement and in measuring educational quality.
Educational institutes implement a multitude of evaluations and assessments of their students as well as teachers. Although many people will assume that assessments and evaluations are the same exact thing, Angelo, and Cross, (1993) inform us that an assessment focuses more on the learning as well as teaching outcomes, which provide teachers with practical based results. If educators assess students properly, consequently teachers could use the results to accommodate students’ specific needs. According to Manitoba Education (N.d), there are various purposes for doing assessments. However, the two main objectives of these assessments are: “assessment for learning and assessment of learning” (Pg. 1). The first module of assessing students aids teachers in developing acuity of the knowledge that students understand and or need to develop. Brantley, (2007) adds that by using this method, “educators will use the results to guide instruction by noting the student’s strengths and areas of need and modifying the instruction as needed” (Pg.30). Once we know what students need, we can guide as well as facilitate their learning while in the classroom. The evaluation in the end should be the final stage of observing if the students have acquired a mastery of concept learning. Therefore, the significance of assessments aids educators and staff in describing, judging as well as improving the quality of the education for our learners.
