Do industry professionals have the ethical responsibility to produce society-making media rather than segment-making media? Why or why not?

ANSWER:

Industry professional do have the ethical responsibility to produce society-making media rather than segment-making media. The responsibility stems from the fact that media is having a profound effect on the viewers. Many researches have been conducted into the effect of violence shown in media on the behavior of the viewers. These researches have proven that violence can have short term and long term effect. Short term effect makes people act violently if they are rewarded for it and long term effect desensitizes people to acts of violence in real life. Rodman (2010) states “ In 1968, following riots in Detroit and Newark, President Lyndon Johnson appointed the National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence. One part of the commission’s report dealt with violence and the media, especially television. This was a huge undertaking, involving both summaries and original research studies. In summarizing past research, the study reaffirmed both short-term and long-term effects that other researchers had established. In the short term, audience members might model acts of violence they see in the media, especially if they expect to be rewarded for it. In the long term, they might experience desensitization, a process by which viewers of media violence develop callousness or emotional neutrality in the face of a real-life act of violence. Desensitization became a popular explanation for the failure of onlookers to come to the aid of mugging victims in major cities. Critics today worry that violent video games will desensitize players in the same way” (p. 38).
