One significant change that happened to the prison industry in the twentieth century includes the move from releasing a convict on the basis of the neck verse. The neck verse consisted of the inmate citing from memorization a certain passage out of the bible; generally it was Psalms 51 of the Bible. The condition with the neck verse is that anyone, regardless if they understood or not, or could read or not, could recite this verse and avoid being imprisoned or released from prison.
