The department I used to work at was a bit more diversified and it really helped to get information out of people. Races like to talk to their own races if they believe they may get in trouble, for some reason people believe if the guy is the same color as I am then he'll be a little more lenient. Not only that but if a person was a victim of a criminal of a certain race it's a very good chance that victim will prefer to talking to someone of a different race as well. Those are few of my observations about the advantages about having a diversified police fore. Though one of the big disavantages is for the cops themsevles. If a department only has one or two black street patrol officers, then it's most likely they will be working in black neighborhoods and it will be difficult for them to switch off with anyone else. (Thats usually the case for anyone of any race, you may be pigeonholed into a neighborhood of your race). The only real barriers in this thing is that there aren't a lot of minorities wanting to become police officers so most departments are primarily white. However I read that there has been a slight influx of hispanic officers in the last few years, from the whole deal with the Illegals becoming so prevalent in this country.
