Well it's great. It opens the pool of competent employees up to twice as many people, making the possibility of getting the right employee twice as good. Women have proven that they can get high marks and be excellent officers and leaders time and time again.

 

I guess some of the risks would be that if a women elects to have a baby, her ability to perform her duties would be impacted far longer than a brief 6-week maternity leave. There are some jobs within law enforcement, like SWAT that women may not be strong, fast, and aggressive enough to perform.

 

If the importance of women policing were overlooked, then we'd go back to having 1/2 as many good candidates. Most officers who write traffic tickets, offer civil patrol, and do most things intrinsically associated with police work - male or female - are really like armed social workers. Social work is a field where women have excelled, and they are excelling in law enforcement too.
