            Of the different options given, we will select the case study, [ Serial. No.1] , where we are required to fit psychological theories in the case of the protagonist Deborah Shore.

            The Case:  45 year old, Deborah Shore works for Research and Development based organization and has been working there for the past 15 years. Deborah was earlier very proactive and bright, coming up with brilliant research solutions, due to which she got raises and promotions quickly and with ease, also winning the respect and admiration of her colleagues in her department. However, Deborah now does not have the zeal for creative thinking, and her younger colleagues do not look up to her. She however still makes contributions to administration, but no creative contributions to her research and development department.

It is obvious that Deborah’s has undergone a change in her behavior. The responsibility for this change can be attributed to which psychological theory, may be examined by analysis as follows:

The Psychoanalytic Theory:

            Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, gave life to the Psychoanalysis theory. Freud had the view that changes in behaviors are all rooted in different events which occurs to us during childhood and which are sexual in nature. Certain events affect us emotionally to such an extent that we subconsciously repress these memories. We remember only what we want to remember. Freud’s concentrated only on four stages of life in the early and formative years. Erikson who modified Freud’s theory, emphasized the importance of both early and later experiences. In Erikson’s theory, eight stages of development unfold as we go through life, of which the late adult phase reflects Deborah’s behavior. This suggests that Deborah’s peculiar behavior change is due to some unwanted mental images or memories, which is now influencing Deborah.


The Cognitive theory perspective

            The cognitive or learning theory was brought into the list of  theories by US psychologist, Albert Bandura.  In this theory, Bandura acknowledged that the model of learning and development includes three elements: behavior, the person/cognition, and the environment. An individual’s confidence that he can control his or her success is an example of a “ person factor”; strategies are an example of a cognitive factor. Behavior, Cognition, and environmental factors operate interactively. In Deborah’s case, we cannot think of any situation which will lead to the situation as given in the case.


Context Perspective Theory/ Ecological Theory

            Urie Bronfenbrenner (1917–2005) first shaped this theory. He held that behavior and development arise out of the environment. He divided this environment into five types namely microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem , and chronosystem. This is depicted by the figure below. Now considering all the theories, we can conclude that this theory has the greatest potential for explaining the reason behind the behavior of Deborah Shore. It may have so happened that due to some oversight, her boss subjected Deborah to harsh words. Again, she may be exposed to face various kinds of household stress.



However, it will be apt to point out that human behavior cannot be shaped by a single theory alone as human behavior is known for its complex characteristics. Life span development holds up many good promises towards comprehensive behavior development and consequent exhibition.
