Web 2.0 is a type of online interactive forum that businesses are using in order to have a cutting edge on the market. There is a homepage that allows someone to access the Web 2.0 servers, and this is the link: http://www.go2web20.net/. This link will bring you to a number of Web 2.0 services, such as Google buzz, which is like a Facebook where you can exchange emails and news stories with your friends or clients. Google seems to be the main premise of Web 2.0, as well as Tim O’Reilly and Media Live International. Media Live International produces information technology, and Tim O’Reilly is credited with a brainstorming session along with Media Live that created Web 2.0.

Tim O’Reilly believes that the dotcom bubble led the way for the Web 2.0, as the companies that survived the crash were leading the way into a new era of internet usage by businesses and consumers (O’Reilly). He classifies Web 2.0 as a new style as compared to the old internet. For instance, Britannica Online has been replaced by Wikipedia, mp3.com has been replaced by Napster, and a whole list is given in order to clarify what he means.

While social networking is very popular on the internet, it is mostly centered on Facebook, Myspace, and a few others. Web 2.0 seems to be the business version of the social interactive networks, especially in the form of blogs. The business world has a fascination with blogs, because it represents information from a large and diverse gathering of people. By listening to opinions on blogs, a business can get an understanding of how trends are rising in the market. Tim O’Reilly says that a technology called RSS is the most significant advance in the fundamental architecture of the web, because it allows a person to not just view a page but subscribe to it and get notified every time the website is updated (O’Reilly 3). It is this kind of up to the minute interaction that makes Web 2.0 a positive thing for businesses.

On the down side, Web 2.0 is really just a new way of looking at the internet. It seems as if the crashing of the dotcom bubble dissuaded businesses away from the internet, and now Web 2.0 is trying to make the web seem more enticing once again. While the interactive networks can help business get up to the minute updates concerning the market, it seems that there can be an overload of information and thus some of it may not be very useful. While Web 2.0 is a useful tool to help businesses, it is far from the conventional wisdom they try to make Web 2.0 out to be. O’Reilly’s list, published in 2005, shows Napster as being the new mp3.com, but in that short amount of time, Napster had already fallen off the pedestal, so it seems like his other programs could fall just as quickly, with little to no warning in advance. If Web 1.0 had its faults, then Web 2.0 is just a little bit better, but no doubt has faults of its own.
