Request Description

·         Define each of the following methodologies for IT project management: prototyping, rapid applications development (RAD), joint applications development (JAD), and systems development life cycle (SDLC). What are the advantages of each methodology? Which one do you think would be the most beneficial for managing an IT project?

Response:

Prototype systems are a smaller version to be tested from users. Instead of developing the system all in once, the company sets up components of the new system that are of most interest to the user. Advantages are that prototyping increases the speed of the development, and gives opportunities to clarify their information requirements. For example, Windows gives to some users so called Beta versions out to test them.

Joint application design (JAD) is a group-based tool for collecting user requirements and creating system designs. Users meet simultaneously with analysts, where they define and agree on systems requirements. The advantage is that it saves time, involves many users, and therefore has a greater support for the system.

Rapid application development (RAD) is a system development method that can combine JAD, prototyping, and integrated CASE tools. First, JAD sessions are used to involve users early. Requirements, designs, and the system itself are developed and then undergo improvements. Advantages are that it promotes strong collaborative atmosphere and dynamic gathering of requirements. Microsoft Office used this tool.

Systems development life cycle (SDLC) is the process of creating or altering systems, and the models and methodologies that people use to develop these systems. In project management a project can be defined both with a project life cycle and a SDLC, during which slightly different activities occur. The SDLC involves the steps of developing, planning, analysis, design, and implementation.
