There are many different online advertising options available. Each one has different pros and cons.

 

Online advertising options include search engines, auctions, classified ads, banner exchanges, blogs, websites, ezines, pop-up ads, pay-per-click ads, Craigslist, facebook.com, myspace.com, twitter, and email advertising companies such as Constant Contact, and I Contact.

 

Some of the advantages of online ads are that you can target your ads to a certain population. For example, if you are a local used book seller, you can advertise in your specific area on Craigslist in your specific area for free. If you are a company that offers something to a huge population, you can advertise globally via the Internet. Online advertising also allows you to use various types of advertising that include video, sound, and print. You can also track how many people actually see your ad whereas with traditional advertising you never know who really sees your advertisement. Online advertising can also be cheaper than traditional advertising. You can advertise for free in many cases. It is also very easy to change your online advertisement compared to changing a hard copy.

 

Some disadvantages of online advertisements are that small companies are competing against huge companies that are already secure in the market and have a lot of money for marketing thus making bigger, brighter, and more appealing online advertisements. If you use a pay-per-click ad, you will lose some money from people who really do not want to buy your product but make a mistake and click on it anyway. Spam is also a big problem with online advertising. Many email addresses have programs that do not let all emails come through. In addition, many people do not open emails that look like they are advertisements. There is also a part of the market that you might not reach through online advertising such as senior citizens and poor people who do not have access to a computer and the internet.

 

Overall, I believe that online ads are very effective. I have bought things that were advertised to me online. Online advertising is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It is not limited to a certain time when one reads the morning newspaper. As the Internet continues to grow I am sure that online advertising will grow with it.
