·         What are information resources? What types of information resources does a business usually need? Why is it important for a general manager to be knowledgeable about information technology?

Response:

Information resources are places where you can get knowledge. For example, an encyclopedia is an information resource. A book is an information resource. A journal is an information resource. A company's annual report is an information resource. The types of information resources that a business usually needs depends on the type of business, however, almost all businesses are more successful when they have access to computer/electronic information resources. For one thing, most companies need to market their products, so using the web to research statistics about cities with large populations under age 25, for example, might be important for a company that wants to market an acne cream.

That same company might want to see what other skin-product companies are selling their products for, so the individual websites of the competitors can be a useful information resource. Medical journals and articles might be good information resources for the chemists who are fabrication the acne cream. Government tax guides would be a good information resource for the company to use to figure out which advertising and research expenses can be deducted from income. Even another company can be an information resource. For example, if the acne cream company doesn't want to worry about legal and payroll concerns, the acne company can outsource the human resources work (hiring, firing, and payroll) to an employment agency. The employment agency can provide useful information about the salaries.

It is important for a general manager to be knowledgeable about information technology because arguabley, the majority of information resources are available in electronic format. Getting information electronically is faster than traveling in person to the library or to the employment agency or to the IRS office. Time can mean the difference between getting sales and not getting sales, between keeping customers and losing them. Customer service is provided electronically by phone or by live computer chat, in many cases.

In conclusion, much preparation and follow-up is required to operate a successful business. This preparation and follow-up is made easier through the acquisition of various forms of high-quality information. Since many information resources are available electronically, and since time is critical in business, general managers need to be knowledgeable about information technology.
