Request Description

The last time I attended a lecture or were in a classroom was at my place of employment and pertained to learning HIPAA and OSHA laws due to the fact that I work in a medical capacity and I am required to attend the training. At first, I had a very difficult time retaining the information that was being presented; it would come in one ear, and exit the other within just a few minutes - without letting me remember it. My short-term memory was functioning efficiently, but my long-term memory fell short. I believe there were reasons for this, nonetheless. The person presenting spoke extremely fast and in monotone; it was difficult to catch what he was saying, and it was equally as difficult to stay awake. The presenter actually would ask [us] random questions without warning to see if we were paying attention; I recall that I was not able to answer one question correctly.

I do recall that my long-term memory finally did start functioning the way I wanted it to when the presenter started incorporating visual aids into his presentation. I tend to learn best by seeing, so learning through this method required less focus, making it easier for me to retain it.  Once it became apparent that the overall group, including myself, was retaining the material better through this means, the presenter started incorporating more visuals into his presentation, and overall, it became easier for us to follow along while retaining what was being presented. By knowing the information processing model and how I learn best, my learning potential can surely be increased by using visuals, whether it involves me using flashcards or even drawing pictures; utilizing these methods would definitely reduce the likelihood of me forgetting important information.
