Ashford 4: - Week 3 - Discussion 1

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Reference the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

The origin of a leader has been a topic of debate for decades.  While some believe that leaders are born, others argue that leaders are made.  Both sides of the debate have major implications for future leaders and the I/O psychologists who will work with them.  Explore the relationship between leadership characteristics, including innate ability, personality, and communication.

Do you believe that leaders are born or made?  Why?  Describe how an individual’s personality helps or hinders his/her leadership ability.  Compare and contrast leaders with managers. What are the similarities and differences between these two titles?  Explain how communication style impacts leadership effectiveness. Do you have to be an effective communicator to be a leader? Why or why not?

Your initial post should be a minimum of 250-300 words.  You must use at least one scholarly, peer-reviewed source that was published within the past five years and is cited according to APA guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Guided Response: Review several of your classmates’ posts.  Respond substantively to at least two of your peers. Describe how their positions contrast with your post.  What other qualities, other than those your peers discussed, do you think are important for a leader to possess?  Why?
