Discussion Assignment

Assignment 1: Discussion Assignment

OSHA

The discussion assignment provides a forum for discussing the relevant topics for this week based on the course competencies covered. Continuing through Week 10, you will participate in a weekly discussion with your classmates that will help prepare you for the quizzes in Week 5 and Week 10.

For the assignment this week, you need to relate the information from the OSHA website to the guidelines outlined in your laboratory manual and answer the following questions:

  • What are universal precautions? Provide at least two examples.
  • What additional information do you think is necessary for healthcare professionals and students to know? Do some additional research on the subject of laboratory safety and share your findings with your classmates.

  • Search for and share case studies on organizations that did or did not effectively implement OSHA’s guidelines for safety. What were the medical and legal consequences of non-compliance?

Cite any sources in APA format.

Participate by responding to the main discussion questions. Also, choose two other discussions in which to participate. This means you will be an active participant in a minimum of three different discussions. Post your main post bySaturday, December 14, 2013, then have the remainder of the week to respond to other posts.

Solution Description

1. What are universal precautions? Provide at least two examples.
Universal precautions are safety precautions regarding how to handle all patient specimens (A. Young & D. Proctor, 2007). Examples are personal protective clothing and equipment such as; gloves, safety glasses, and washing hands at all times.

2. What additional information do you think is necessary for healthcare professionals and students to know? Do some additional research on the subject of laboratory safety and share your findings with your classmates.
