Viruses and Homeostasis

Using the South University Online Library or the Internet, research about viruses and homeostasis. Based on your research and understanding, provide your response to the following tasks:

  • Analyze the feedback mechanisms that maintain homeostasis, and what happens when these systems do not function appropriately. Provide two specific examples for each.
  • Provide the organizational levels in order, beginning at the atom. Then, analyze how each level relates to specific functions and to each other.
  • Evaluate metabolism, anabolism, and catabolism. Then, distinguish them by providing an example for each of these and the end result for that reaction.
  • Analyze and define internal and external respiration in terms of physiology and anatomy.
Solution Description

1.     Analyze the feedback mechanisms that maintain homeostasis, and what happens when these systems do not function appropriately. Provide two specific examples for each.

When the human body contains a stable, reliable, and harmonious environment this is known as homeostasis, (Martini, 2009, ch.1, 1-6, pg.12). The makeup of homeostasis consists of negative feedback and positive feedback. Negative feedback is the primary mechanism that corrects and regulates the environment inside of the body, (Martini, 2009, ch.1, 1-6, pg.14). Positive feedback is important in the process of regulating the environment of the body, because positive feedback accelerates the process of healing and fixing the environment inside of the body, (Martini, 2009, ch.1, 1-6, pg.16). One example of a feedback mechanisms not functioning correctly would be when someone gets a sinus infection and they get to where they cannot stand up without getting help. Another example of feedback mechanisms not functioning correctly would be when a baby is born with down syndrome, showing that the feedback mechanisms were not working completely while the mother was pregnant, (Martini, 2009, ch.1, 1-6, pg.16).
