The larynx is an instrument in the human body that is used in communication. According to Chapter 8 of Introduction to Communication Disorders, when the larynx is compromised due to illness or overuse, a person runs the risk of further damage and possible surgical intervention (Owens, Metz, and Farinella, 2015). Oftentimes, all that is needed is vocal rest and avoidance of typical vocal pitch and loudness associated with the normal phonation process. How does vocal rest affect the daily activities of patients? What advice or tools would you provide to help those who are prescribed vocal rest? What other exercises might be added to a systematic program of vocal rest?
